Course Descriptions

We provide sailing lessons and follow the strict sailing instruction certification standards of the American Sailing Association (ASA). Fair Wind Sailing School offers ASA sailing lessons in: Basic Sailing Lessons, ASA 101; Basic Cruising Sailing Instruction, ASA 103; Bareboat Charter Sailing Instruction, ASA 104; Coastal Navigation, ASA 105; Advanced Sailing Instruction, ASA 106; and Celestial Navigation, ASA 107 . In addition, we are pleased to announce the addition of Catamaran Sailing Lessons starting in the winter of 2006. Our catmaran sailing lessons will offer certification at ASA 114, catamaran sailing instruction in the Virgin Islands. Fair Wind Sailing School offers ASA curriculum for ocean passage courses. The ocean sailing lessons are offered on a non-certification basis. At Fair Wind Sailing School, all sailing lessons begin with the standard ASA curriculum. We then enhance the sailing instruction with tools, study guides, and teaching techniques specifically developed from our experience teaching sailing lessons to make learning how to sail easier, faster and more fun. By accelerating the "academic portion of learning, we allow students to spend more time on the water sailing the boat.

While the ASA academic sailing instruction provides a great foundation, our philosophy is that you learn sailing on the water by sailing the boat. Fair Wind Sailing School’s emphasis is on developing and practicing proper boat handling, cruising, and safety techniques. Our goal is to assure that our students not only achieve their ASA certification, but also know what to do when our ASA instructor is no longer present. By spending the majoriy of our sailing lessons on the water sailing, we believe students retain their skills long after their sailing lessons have been completed. Therefore, at Fair Wind Sailing School the majority of our ASA sailing instruction is conducted on the water.

We offer ASA sailing lessons in weekend, weekday and week long sailing instruction.

Our pricing is inclusive of all on board expenses (except introductory courses), including: boat, instructor, provisions, meals, customs expenses, mooring fees, running expenses, text books, log books, certification fees and sales tax. The only exceptions would be alcoholic beverages and ASA Instructor's gratuity if you think one is deserved
